6-9-10 Progressive Field

I decided to see the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field.  It would be the first time I’d see the Red Sox in the regular season (I had seen them several times before in Spring Training).

I got to the stadium after 4PM, but was still the first in line.  The Indians were already hitting, so I was hoping to find a few Easter Eggs.  Unfortunately, when I got into the right field stands, I didn’t find anything, although a young kid did find one.

I checked in the bullpen briefly and saw this:
I went to work immediately, throwing my glove into the bullpen to nudge the ball closer to the wall, and then glove tricking ball #1.  With the ball in my possession, I ran over to Heritage Park to search the trees.
Game:  10 balls (6 hit, 1 thrown, 2 device, 1 found)

Attendance: 14,022 (with the Red Sox in town!) Surprising.

6-5-10 PNC Park

Today was once again ruined by rain.

A storm hit around 4PM, totally washing away any hopes of batting practice.

Here’s a brief video of the storm, for you fans of bad weather.

I would get shut out for the first hour or so, until I discovered that there were three balls laying on the visitor’s bullpen bench.

The balls had become soaked by the storm, so when things cleared up, a few groundskeepers came out to check things out around the warning track.  I asked one of them for a ball, and he handed me balls #1 and #2.

6-4-10 PNC Park

Storms were forecast for today, so both teams would hit very early.

I got to the park at 3:15, and the Pirates were already in the middle of their BP.

I watched as at least 20 balls landed in the seats.

Batting practice wrapped up right before the gates opened, but I decided to go in anyway to look for easter eggs that were passed over by ushers.

When I got into the stadium, the field was completely empty.

Stephen Strasburg Major League Debut

I’ll be in attendance at Stephen Strasburg’s Major League Debut on Tuesday, June 8th.
Its probably one of the most anticipated games of the season to date, as Strasburg was the number one pick in the country last season.  Scouts have called him the best talent to come out of the draft in quite some time, and his minor league numbers this season back that up.

He’s got a 1.30 ERA in 11 starts in the minors this year with 65 strike outs in 55 innings.

Anyone else headed to this game?

What’s your prediction for the number of Pirates he strikes out?  I’m guessing 9.

6-2-2010 PNC Park

Today’s game would get off to a bad start before the gates even opened.

At around 4:15, the skies opened up, and it started to pour.
100_3023.JPGIt washed out BP as the warning track was filled with water.

6-1-10 PNC Park

Today was a little more difficult than yesterday, because far fewer balls were hit into the stands.  Sometimes it just goes that way.

My first ball of the day was off the bat of Lastings Milledge.  He hit a home run that popped out of my glove and I had to scoop up.  I’ve had some bad luck the past few days with balls popping out.  It might be time to get rid of the 40 feet of string that fills up the inside of my glove.

The second ball was another Milledge hit.  This time it was a ground rule double that bounced over the fence.  I ran to my right, and caught the ball barehanded as it bounced off a bleacher.
My third ball of the day was thrown by bullpen catcher Heberto Andrade.  Someone on the Pirates hit a deep home run that hit off of the steel support of the general admission bleachers.  Herbie looked at the ball for a minute, and then turned and fired the ball to me.

Ball #4 was glove tricked in front of the State Farm sign in left field.

5-31-10 PNC Park

Today was Memorial Day, and there was an autograph session of former Pirates that would begin at 11:30 when the gates were to open.  So, the line to get into batting practice was easily the longest I’ve seen it all season.

And I was near the end of it.

When I finally got in, I managed to get two balls rather quickly from the lone pitcher who was in the outfield, Chris Jackubauskus.  He tossed me ball #1 from about 100 feet away or so, then began tossing balls to the other folks in the outfield.  The second ball came when he overthrew a group of people in the front row.  I was right there to pick it up.

5-29-2010 Great American Ballpark

I figured I would take a trip to Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati today to snag a few baseballs and get three Joey Votto figurines (I had three tickets as I traded in two tickets from my 13 game plan that I couldn’t use).  I planned to sell the Figurines to help pay for the gas.

Of course, when I arrived at the park, this was waiting for me:
100_2982.JPGNo figurines today.  Just great.

The gates opened at 5:10 to season ticket holders, so I rushed in, only to find a large tour group already occupying right field.  Fantastic.  No easter eggs.

I got ball #1 of the day off the bat of Jay Bruce in right field.
